Abstract

Angular momentum and rotation are related in several complementary ways. Rotating material systems contain angular momentum, and the quantum-mechanical operators for angular momentum are the generators of rotation. In mechanical systems, we naturally distinguish spin and orbital angular momentum as intrinsic and extrinsic contributions. For Maxwell fields, the situation is less straighforward. We shall analyze the analogues of these statements for electromagnetic fields in general, and for light beams in particular.
