Conserved quantities in classical electrodynamics and their use in radio studies of space

Abstract

EM wave polarization in two, three, and four dimensions is discussed. A set of covariant polarization tensors is presented. Dynamical equations,in the form of conservation laws, are derived for two of these tensors. It is suggested that one of these laws corresponds to conservation of spin angular momentum. Its relation to (orbital) angular momentum is disucsse in the case of electric multipole radiation.
