Abstract
Besides operating incoherent scatter radars, EISCAT offers a
powerful HF transmitter (heating facility) in the 4-8 MHz range and
a digital sounder (dynasonde). One of the areas of recent research
interest is how do the various non-linear phenomena produced in the
ionosphere by powerful HF-wave injection vary with look-direction,
in particular with respect to the geomagnetic field. To address one
aspect of this, we recently had a large international campaign where
an HF interferometer was used to find the direction of arrival of
stimulated electromagnetic emissions (SEE). Some initial results
will be shown.
Various upgrades to the HF facility are being made. We are
intending to use one of the transmitting antenna arrays as a 21 dBi
gain receiving array to look for magnetospheric or other echoes at 8
MHz from along the geomagnetic field-aligned direction. Ideas for
experiments and possible collaborations will be discussed.
