Abstract

LOFAR is not only suitable for the imaging of steady sources, but can also detect variable phenomena and unpredictable events. Such sources include radio bursts from sources within the Solar system (the Sun, Jupiter) and radiation arising in Extensive Air Showers (EAS) from Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (E > 1016 eV).

Using the LOFAR test stations ITS and LOPES, radio bursts from the Sun and Jupiter have been detected. Radio emission from particles in EAS is now being monitored permanently by LOPES, which is triggered by conventional air shower detectors. An independent trigger for CR detection with ITS will be in operation soon. First observations with LOPES/ITS will be presented.
