Abstract

The presentation will briefy discuss the possible contributions from the Danish Meteorological Institute to the proposed LOFAR/LOIS system. The prime interest from DMI arises from the possible uses of the LOFAR and in particular the LOIS system in weather radar applications for the detection of vertical and horizontal motions of air masses, heat, waves and turbulences. In a combination with acoustic pulse transmitters the system might also produce precise temperature profiles in the troposphere and possibly higher. Compared to available wind profiler systems and MST (Mesosphere-Stratosphere-Troposphere) radars the proposed LOFAR/LOIS system offers versatile frequency selection over a wide range, much enhanced transmitter power and immensely increased receiver sensitivity and directivity. With this combination the proposed LOFAR/LOIS system will most likely enable an in-depth exploration of all aspects and the full potential of ground-based weather radar systems. In addition the DMI has considerable interests in possible space weather applications and in the use of the proposed LOFAR/LOIS system for ionospheric and magnetospheric soundings.
